Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Four mothers at Medinipur Medical College were transferred to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata after developing severe health complications following childbirth on Wednesday. One of the mothers passed away the next day, and the remaining three continue to be in critical condition. The cause of their deteriorating health is linked to the saline solution administered post-delivery, according to initial medical reports. The severity of their conditions prompted their urgent transfer to SSKM for specialized treatment.
Mampi Singh, one of the affected mothers, reported that her family encountered a critical shortage of blood at Medinipur Medical College. Due to the unavailability of blood locally, they had to arrange for blood to be brought in from Kolkata. Similarly, Minara Bibi’s family faced the same difficulty in obtaining blood, forcing them to make arrangements for its transportation from outside the district. This delay in securing necessary blood supplies contributed to the worsening health of the patients.
There were also concerns regarding communication about the condition of the mothers. One of the family members stated that although doctors initially reassured them that the patients would recover, no further updates were provided on their health status. After four days of treatment, one of the mothers was still experiencing abdominal swelling, and the absence of urination raised concerns among the family. Additionally, the newborns were reportedly discharged within a day of birth, despite the mother's critical health condition.
As of now, two of the mothers remain in critical care at SSKM Hospital, with one receiving treatment in the ICU. Medical tests, including complete blood counts and infection monitoring, have been conducted. One of the patients may require dialysis, and her condition is being closely monitored. In total, five medical specialists from SSKM Hospital, including doctors from the departments of nephrology, obstetrics, anesthesiology, and internal medicine, are involved in assessing and treating the patients. A medical board of five members has been formed to evaluate the situation and make decisions on further treatment. A meeting is scheduled for Monday to review the conditions of the affected mothers and decide on additional medical interventions. Meanwhile, the hospital continues to monitor the patients closely, and families are being updated on their conditions.
